mSpace, via ECS Partners, has been chosen as the front end and search framework for a new and exciting resource to be offered to Higher and Further Education in the UK. The News Film Online project will provide access to 3,000 hours of television news and cinema newsreels, taken from the huge collection of the ITN/Reuters archive.
New advanced exploratory search features of mSpace will be utilised to give higher/further education facilities the ability to find news media that is relevant to their interests as well learn about the huge archive of news material.
Part of the £10m JISC digitisation programme and with £2.2 million funding, Newsfilm Online will be a gateway of unmatched richness to nearly one hundred years of news, from the 1910s to the present day. Additionally, 3,500 hours of existing British Pathe content will be licensed for use as well as over 12 million images.
The mSpace explorer will work in tandem with Advanced Search algorithms to provide a complete portal into the 150,000+ items of news material in the archive. New mSpace features are also being developed specifically for the News Film Online project, such as timeline tools, tagging systems and video previews to make it even easier for users to explore the information in a way that they want.
