CS AKTive Space

Before there was the mSpace software framework, there was the mSpace interaction paradigm. This paradigm was first applied in the AKT Semantic Web applation CS AKTive Space which let people explore computer science research in the UK: it used tens of millions of triples from heterogeous sources, in ways those sources had not initially been planned to be used, creating a gestalt picture of computer science research and researchers in the UK.

CS AKTive Space won first place in the 2003 Semantic Web Challenge. The ap is available for use and updates regularly. There is also a good description of the goals for the project and the delivery in the IEEE Intelligent Systems Magazine article "CS AKTive Space: How We Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Semantic Web..

The lessons learned in the design of CS AKTive Spaces, in particular how the mSpace approach might be operationalized for general Semantic Web deployment lead directly to the design of the mSpace software framework.

ACM Special Research Distinction Awarded for Excellent Presentation of Theoretical Concepts, Hypertext 04

The award was given at the Hypertext Conference 2004 for the paper A Comparison of Hyperstructures: Zzstructures, mSpaces, and Polyarchies. The goal of the paper was to formally compare, in terms of graph theory, the relations of various structures for representing hypermedia, and by this, provide designers of hypermedia/web spaces a design taxonomy for choosing which strucutre to deploy.
